Mt. Azumaya (Azumayasan)

Mt. Azumaya (772m), also known as Mt. Agatsuma, is a sacred mountain located in Ogano Town, Chichibu County, Saitama Prefecture. Perched at the eastern edge of a ridge dividing the Karasu and Komori Rivers, it was once feared as a haunt for Tengu spirits.

The higher peak houses Tengu Shrine while the smaller peak enshrines Azumaya Shrine, which was originally an okumiya (inner shrine) of Hoyoji Temple and is now a rear shrine of Ryogami Shrine after a merger.

In recent years, the common hiking route starts from Mitsumineguchi Station on Chichibu Railway, taking a bus to Yakushido and using the vehicle road halfway up before reaching the summit in about 1.5 hours. The mountain is dotted with colonies of adonis ramosa along the way and has been worshipped for rain prayers in Komori district since ancient times.
