Mt. Fudo

Perched atop the Kodama Hills along the border of Kodama Town and Nagatoro Town in Chichibu, Mount Fudo stands at an elevation of 549 meters. It's the highest point in Nagatoro and a symbol of the lush nature of the Chichibu region. The mountain's name derives from a moss-covered Fudo deity situated near the summit, inspired by the mossy rock faces of former blue stone quarries, likened to the Fudo Myoo. From the inner sanctuary maintained by the Fudo Mountain Doumyouin, you can enjoy a sweeping view of Northern Kanto and the Western Kozuke region. For ages, this mountain has been a vital connection between Chichibu and Kodama, with historical passes like Enoki, Mase, Nukabuki, and Ideushi serving as important routes. The trail starting from Chichibu Railway's Nogami Station winds through verdant greenery to the moss-clad Fudo deity, leading up to the paved forest road at Fudo Pass. From there, splitting off along the north face, the trail follows the ridge and reaches the summit in about 2 hours. Alternatively, starting from Higuchi Station, you can aim for Mase Pass and head west along the ridge, reaching it in about 1 hour and 30 minutes. There's also a hiking course from Jinmi Mountain that takes you through Enoki and Mase Passes, allowing you to reach the summit in about 3 hours while enjoying the rich natural environment. Although the quietude of Mount Fudo has been slightly diminished by the road that cuts through its ridge, the mountain's intrinsic allure remains untouched. As you walk paths steeped in history, take the time to fully appreciate the vistas from the summit.
