Mt. Yunomaru

Mount Yunomaru stands at an elevation of 2,101 meters, straddling the border between Tomi City in Nagano Prefecture and Tsumagoi Village in Gunma Prefecture. The origin of the mountain's name is unclear, but it is thought to derive from its appearance as a large, round mountain visible from the hot spring valley below, particularly Kanazawa Onsen at its base.
The mountain is formed from andesitic lava and is part of the Eboshi Volcano Group. The summit area is notably gentle and features expansive grasslands, offering a sense of the mountain's grandeur. The region is also known as Yunomaru Highland, recognized for its scenic and touristic value.
Yunomaru is renowned as an early center for mountain skiing and is considered relatively safe and easy to climb. Particularly striking is the sight in June when the rhododendrons bloom in profusion, setting the mountainside ablaze with vibrant red hues.
Access to the summit can be achieved in just over an hour from Jizo Pass, though a more leisurely two-hour hiking route from Kanazawa Onsen is also popular. Along this trail, hikers can find peace in the sight of a hundred stone statues of Kannon, offering tranquility to all who pass.
