Mt. Shirane

Mount Shirane (Shirane-san), located in Kusatsu Town, Gunma Prefecture, is one of the area's distinguished peaks, standing at 2,171 meters for Hon-Shiranesan and 2,160 meters for Mount Shirane. Often referred to as "Kusatsu Shiranesan," it is part of the Joshin'etsu Kogen National Park.

The mountain area is expansive, making it difficult to discern its full range and exact summit locations at a glance. The slopes are covered with volcanic ash and scree, and the air is tinged with the scent of hydrogen sulfide, giving the appearance of snow-capped peaks. The name "Shirane" suggests peaks dressed in white snow, fitting the Kusatsu area's wintry reputation.

Volcanic activity is centered around three explosive craters, notable for features like Yugama and Yumike, which are distinctive for their vivid, sulfurous waters. The area has recorded numerous eruptions, with recent activity in 2018. The explosion crater lakes, such as Yugama and Mizugama, offer wide diameters and provide unique volcanic landscapes.

The trails are well-maintained, and a short hike of about 500 meters leads to an explosive crater lake filled with sulfur-rich water. The harsh volcanic environment limits the diversity of flora and fauna, but some alpine plants, dragonflies, and birds can be observed thriving under these conditions.

Access to the mountain starts from Kusatsu Town in Gunma Prefecture, with additional routes from Nagano Prefecture through several hot spring resorts. Opened in 1966, National Route 292, along with lifts and ropeways from Kusatsu Onsen and Manza Onsen, facilitate easy access to near the summit, attracting many tourists to this volcanic landscape.
